Vote For Shannon Love

My Bio

I'm a retired teacher-librarian, I'm married to Bo Love, a Principal, longtime coach and student athlete of BVPS, my daughter Delaney is an Art teacher, my mother is a teacher and my youngest daughter that just graduated from William and Mary just started at UVA this month in their Educational Psychology Program. Education isn't just something we talk about being important to us. It's what we live. It's what we've lived for generations. I did my undergraduate degree at the unniversity of the cumberlands and one of my ancestors taught calligraphy on it's grounds before it was even a college. I lived in the same building as one of my aunt's who was the first female principal in Bell County Ky. When I say Ive got roots in education, those roots go deep. Now I've told you Im a parent, a teacher and i've been a student so those are all people that I empathasize with and support.

I was also an athlete so that's also something that is important to me. It brings in revenue and creates a great deal of community and brings people together. It also builds structure and time management within the student. It builds relationships within teams and parents. So much good comes from sports and the same is true for being in the band and flags! I've had a dancer and a band member in our household so one of them was a flag corp member! You probably remember seeing Delaney Love tossing that wooden riffle up in our yard over and over!!

As a past parent and educator I know that we need to work on our how acessable our buildings and facilities are to our students with special needs and Ive already had conversations about this. Having health issues myself and having a daughter with severe health issues this is something that I pay particular attention too. We need to be mindful as educators of how we meet the needs of ALL our students. Even our students with 504s and IEPs and treat everyone with the respect they deserve, My campaign motto is "it's all about Love" and that's truly how I try to live my life. In fact my entire family tries to live like that. We try to leave everyone we come in contact with much better than when we left them. That's how our school system should be.

I chose to run because of the kids at my church. I volunteer for a program called FISH Club at State Street United Methodist Church. I help in the kitchen then do crafts with the kids or dance with the kids or do Karaoke. Basically I'm the entertainment. :) Well at dinner one night I'm visiting with one of them and we are talking and one of them is talking about his teacher and I just don't like what Im hearing. Im thinking these kids deserve better. Then I'm up at the school for election day and I run into that same student and he asks me a question about church and his teacher looks at him incredulously and says,"you go to church!" It just killed me! it was such a negative statement and I didn't even like how she looked at him. This young woman didn't know who I was either. It was very sad. Children will meet what ever level you set for them. Well it's obvious the bar this teacher has set for this young man is very low. So he's not going to try hard for her at all. We need to do better than this and that's why Im running for school Board.

My Key Issues

Accessiblity

I feel like I just wrote this but there needs to be a focus on accessablity for special needs throughout all the buildings
